Caltagirone (inner south-eastern Sicily) : Caltagirone is a beautiful Baroque town in inner south-eastern Sicily. It owes a lot to the reconstruction after the 1693 Earthquake. One of the most characteristic products is ceramics, you can find shops all over the place. The front of the steps of the steep Scalinata (stairway) is entirely covered in ceramics.

On the Road from Caltagirone to Piazza Armerina : At least a try to landscapes (I have absolutely no experience): some pictures from a twisting road in inner south-eastern Sicily, connecting Caltagirone with Piazza Armerina; a pretty harsh, but fascinating environment. A cloudy day, overcast lighting.

Ortigia - Siracusa (Sicily) : Ortigia is the historical core of the famous city of Siracusa in south-eastern Sicily. Siracusa became one of the super-powers of the Mediterranean See some hundred years b.C. thanks to a key strategic point: the peninsula was easily defended and had a fresh water spring few meters from the sea! The stratification of centuries finds the best examples in the duomo, where an ancient Greek temple in doric style became a Roman basilica first and was embedded in a Christian church later: the basic structure of the temple can still be easily identified.

Catania (Sicily) Via dei Crociferi : Via dei Crociferi in Catania is one of the best examples of the Baroque re-edification which took place in south-eastern Sicily in the aftermaths of a major earthquake in 1693.

I have been really impressed by the mix of ancient grandeur and what seems to an occasional traveller like me like neglect: I'd guess the street plays the road of second violin to the commercial bourgeois heart of the city of Catania, the parallel Via Etnea. I am too ignorant of what stays behind to say more about this, but the fascination of Via Crociferi is not to be underestimated, especially considering that at the end of the road you can find the daedalus of roads where the Fish Market (Mercato del Pesce) takes place.

The first ten pictures are taken in the immediate surroundings (mainly Piazza Stesicoro and roads connecting Via Etnea and Via dei Crociferi).

Fish Market in Catania (Sicily) : The Fish Market in Catania is said to be second only to La Vucciria in Palermo. The atmosphere is really astounding, full of cries and the ancient art of catching the attention among dozens of competitors. Definitely the highlight of a trip to Catania.
